Walking for Wellness Program: Session 2

This group is aimed at increasing physical activity, social activity, and outdoor exposure. These 3 factors are known mental health protective factors. Additionally, engaging in experiential therapy activities may help individuals to process acute and chronic stresses. Reflection exercises will be integrated into the program, with the aim of increasing self-awareness and mindfulness.

Participants must be able to walk for approximately 3km on moderate terrain and sign a participation waiver. COST = $25 for 5 weeks

Who can attend?

This program is open to anyone who is 16 years or older who is able to do moderate (some hills, some uneven terrain, etc.) walking activity for up to an hour.

Is this therapy?

This is not traditional therapy. However, the group is designed to help increase general well-being, which can contribute to achievement in personal goals.

What will be provided?

Umbrellas and light ponchos ~ Journals for reflection exercises ~ Pens ~ Light snack ~ Facilitator with a background in outdoor recreation and psychology

What does a participant need to bring?

Weather appropriate clothing ~ Water (optional) ~ Medications that may be needed during activities ~ A small, comfortable backpack or similar for carrying personal articles

How will participants know where to meet from week-to-week with locations rotating?

A map and written directions will be provided at the previous week’s group. If a participant misses a walk, then the person can contact Pace by phone or email to get the location information.

How early does a participant need to be?

The activities will begin promptly at the starting time. Arriving 5 minutes early should be enough.

Are participants expected to share with the group?

No. The activities are held with a group, but personal reflection time is designed to be individual. The participants may engage in socializing while walking with the group if they want. This is not group therapy, in the traditional sense.

How intense will the physical activity be?

The facilitator will try to set a pace that the whole group can accomplish. A person who can walk at a medium pace for 45 minutes on city trails and sidewalks should have no difficulty with the routes.
